This page will help parents and other advocates work more effectively with school personnel to plan and secure quality education services for children with Down syndrome by providing up-to-date and accurate information about special education law, legal rights and responsibilities, and effective advocacy.  Providing information and training regarding the benefits of inclusion to the education community; coordinating seminars and training on strategies for educating children with Down syndrome, education law and advocacy; and making parents and advocates aware of other helpful resources within the local community.

2008 Joint DSACT/AISD Educator Manual: Working Together to Educate and Include Students with Down Syndrome

DSACT teamed up with Austin Independent School District to create a manual of best practices to guide educators in making the accommodations and adaptations necessary to best teach students with Down syndrome.

Included are background materials on Down syndrome and inclusion, as well as specific information about reading, mathematics, communication, sensory integration dysfunction, and behavior.  The manual also tackles friendships and involvement in extracurricular activities, and provides additional resources you can access for more information.

Members and schools may download for free from the DSACT website or obtain one free printed and bound copy.  Copies will be available at the "Share the Passion" Calendar Gala and the 2008 Buddy Walk, or may be picked up during DSACT office hours.  Please call 323-0808 to make an appointment.
