This page will help parents and other advocates work more effectively with school personnel to plan and secure quality education services for children with Down syndrome by providing up-to-date and accurate information about special education law, legal rights and responsibilities, and effective advocacy.  Providing information and training regarding the benefits of inclusion to the education community; coordinating seminars and training on strategies for educating children with Down syndrome, education law and advocacy; and making parents and advocates aware of other helpful resources within the local community.
 
DSACT Trains 135 Teachers and Parents at January "Practical Solutions" Seminar


On January 29th, 135 educators, therapists, and parents attended the “Practical Solutions for Educating Students with Down Syndrome” workshop sponsored by DSACT to better understand how to successfully engage, instruct and enjoy students with Down syndrome. 

Representatives from over 25 school districts or service providers attended: Austin, Bastrop, Comal, Eanes, Easter Seals, Edinburg, Garden Ridge, Georgetown, Geronimo, Hays County Consolidated, Health South, Hutto, Lake Travis, Leander, Lockhart, Marble Falls, Navarro, New Braunfels, NYOS, Pflugerville, Round Rock,  San Antonio, San Antonio Down  Syndrome Association, San Marcos, Schertz-Cibolo-Univeral City, and Texas Parent to Parent.

The workshop provided an overview of the specific learning needs characteristic of students with Down syndrome, including tips, strategies and solutions relevant to pre-school through high school, including how to open the lines of communication with students and parents; ways to promote independence; behavior modification strategies and alternatives to reward systems; how to promote friendships; and effective IEP goals.

2008 Joint DSACT/AISD Educator Manual: Working Together to Educate and Include Students with Down Syndrome

DSACT teamed up with Austin Independent School District to create a manual of best practices to guide educators in making the accommodations and adaptations necessary to best teach students with Down syndrome. 
 
Included are background materials on Down syndrome and inclusion, as well as specific information about reading, mathematics, communication, sensory integration dysfunction, and behavior.  The manual also tackles friendships and involvement in extracurricular activities, and provides additional resources you can access for more information. 
 
Members and schools may download for free from the DSACT website or obtain one free printed and bound copy.  Copies will be available at the "Share the Passion" Calendar Gala and the 2008 Buddy Walk, or may be picked up during DSACT office hours.  Please call 323-0808 to make an appointment.
